HAND BLOCK PRINTING – Made With Love, Packed With Love.

  • Do you remember how in your childhood, you used to cut a ladyfinger into two and dip it into watercolour to make patterns?

That’s how you can understand hand block printings. The fine and adorable prints in different shapes, colours, and designs. Hand block printing showcased Indian traditional culture.

We went to Jaipur the previous year, we wanted to glimpse Indiana textile from eagle eyes. We were chasing techniques of dyeing block printing. The slow process is always a part of the art. The more time taking art, the more detailing and hard work is involved.

First of all the sketch of the design is done, these designs are then carved on the Sagwan wood. Once the carved on wood is completed then these beautiful designer blocks are sent to the printers. On the other hand, the fabric is coloured yellow by dipping into the solution which involves Turmeric powder and water. This fabric was then sent to the printer for printing. The designer woodblock is pressed on the thick cloth kept in a Tari and then on the fabric, this process requires a balancing force ‘No more, No less’. Natural dye is also the reason for the longevity of the colour. Red, Yellow, black are natural colours It’s it fascinating?

How beautiful designs are printed through the all-natural and traditional way. There are three kinds of blocks, first Gadd is applied then Reck is applied for outlines, and Datta in the end. These are done in such a way that Gadd, Reck, and Datte come in one place. Once the printing is done the fabric is left to dry and washed with normal water. To make colour strong, these fabrics are dipped in warm water in the brass oven. After all this long process the fabric is ready.

Looking at all this prospect hand block printing has a bright future. But is this the reality?

We talked to a few of the artisans about this. Shri Ramkumar who is a Hand Block printer says “There’s no charm left like early days in block printing, but still we want to pass this art to our next generation just like our father and grandfather did, but if the situation remains the same we don’t want our kids to get into this work. Block painting is badly hit by screen printing, the demand for our work has been dropped due to this.”

Block printing also has to pay the price for being in demand. To fulfil the demand, screen printing was born. Screen printing arose thirty to forty years ago.  Being in demand always gives birth to supply, thus screen printing grew to hold the market.

Shri Rinku, a Hand block printer says “The amount of produced commodity by the screen printers is huge in quantity and need less labour, whereas block printing is a slow process that needs a lot of labour. Due to this, the unemployment of hand block printers has touched the sky.”

Chemical dye and acid wash are involved in screen printing. Being at a cheap rate and less time-consuming screen printing has left the hand block printing far away. The hand block printing that saw the Mughals and the British are struggling to stand at risk among its people. Nobody knows what will be the future of ‘Block print’.

We can say that the future depends upon the artist’s shoulder. But artisans also have to take the charge and fight back, be aware, and make their consumers aware. Later they don’t want to regret telling ‘I wish I had done something to prevent this day that we see today’.

Hand woodblock printing is not just a type of printing, it’s a type of tradition that block print artisan has kept alive and decorated it with their sweat and blood for years.

‘One masterpiece that showcases skill, sewing established colour, and halts time.’

No doubly, we were left stunned, how badly they work to keep this craft alive. The creativity, the passion the love that is involved in this Block printing is truly magical.

    WE SALUTE THEIR SPIRIT.

    Hand Block Print Saree

When two yarn weft and warp interlaced at the right angle they create magic, people call it Fabric. ‘How beautiful this world is’, you might have heard this from so many people. Well, this statement is valid to whatever we see, but few things are just magical one of them is weaving. We believe only God can create magic, but once you see how rough, dusty, wounded hands by just string two threads together, they weave them into one beautiful fabric.

These Fabrics are made with a hand-weaving process. Sweat, blood and tears are also involved in the process which no one defines anywhere. Travelling to one village we found aold lady who works as a weaver while talking to her, our eyes can’t hold the emotions. The purity and calmness in her eyes said everything on her behalf. That was the time when we realized ‘Weaver doesn’t just do this for money, it’s something else that connects both weaver and weaving’. The connection is like a soul and body, we could definitionally tell that.

We wear these beautiful garments and sometimes forget to appreciate it. We never knew how hard people had worked to create this magic. Every artist is hungry for applause and we could not stop ourselves when we saw her work. Truly ‘Weaver doesn’t create fabric, they create magic.
